Sustainability

Sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, better lives and healthy ocean ecosystems.

Blue economy

For Yumbah the Blue Economy means globally competitive, sustainable offshore and inshore aquaculture, in concert with mariculture and renewable energy. Australia boasts an over-abundance of natural advantage in each of these industries, but lacks planning and management frameworks that support investment, innovation and scale. Unlocking these Blue Advantages will benefit communities, environment and business.

Australia would farm more marine species at greater volumes and economic value if site selection were possible under a planning system all stakeholders trusted and valued. That’s an argument for Marine Spatial Planning, which provides an integrated social, economic and environmental framework to reduce risk and increase confidence.

Marine Spatial Planning identifies and establishes agreement on locations for specific types of development, with sites pre-screened for critical success factors that support growth and provide investment certainty for all Blue Economy ventures. Australia’s population crowds its eastern seaboard, and conflict over uses and values is endemic.

Marine Spatial Planning identifies parameters for best use of specific areas, reducing conflict and the uncertainty that constrains not just sustainable aquaculture, but all potential best uses, from preservation to commercial utilisation.

At Yumbah, we’re intent on making Blue Promises that help build Australia’s Blue Economy.

When we say we make Blue Promises, they’re based on assessing the Blue Advantages of coastal sites best-suited for sustainable production of premium shellfish, factoring Environment, Social and Governance responsibilities.
