GROWTH SECTOR: Farmed abalone at Yumbah which is expanding its operations.

Yumbah Aquaculture continues to grow its operations with work starting on a new farm at Narrawong, Vic, to complement its Port Lincoln, Kangaroo Island and Bicheno, Tas, operations with plans to produce an extra 16 million juvenile abalone within two years.

Yumbah’s Port Lincoln operations, which employs 15 staff, was upgraded and expanded two years ago and continues to play an important role in the company’s expansion plans, Yumbah’s Craig Marshall says.

“The grand plan is to have 8m extra juveniles in the system by next year and then another extra 8m the year after that.

“Australia’s production is just a drop in the ocean in the world market … we’re looking to make that at least two drops in the ocean.’’

Yumbah is working with another SA company, SmartBar Australia, to design new tanks for its expansion.

SmartBar’s Kevin Baker said the new abalone trays provide more surface area, increased air supply, are easier cleaning and more functional.
